Engorged lips

Tue Jul 7, 2009, 8:41 PM
We live in such luxury. Not only are out basic needs met, but so are our rights to speak out against the government. With enough political pressure, we have the ability to sway any bill, repeal any decision, and stop any war.

So why don't we?

You there, sitting on your fucking ass, in front of your fucking computer have it all, my friend. You've got clean, cool running water. You've got green, fresh crops of wheat and barley that is turned into bread and beer for your gastronomic pleasure.

And yet again, the government of Iran is out there beating people on the streets, because they have the gall to challenge the electoral decision, which put Ahmadinejad -a man who's leadership has been questioned throughout his presidency, back into power as of this year on the 12th of June.

This as restated by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran. He was quoted saying that the Islamic Republic of Iran "would not cheat... would not betray the truth of the people."

Forgive me for sounding biased, if not a bit bitter, but I think the "Republic" of Iran has betrayed much more than that.

The way I see it is if you're going to rig an election, at least do it properly. Mir Hossein Mousavi - the main opponent of Ahmadinejad according to Khamenei (various communism and socialist parties of Iran are not permitted to run in elections, even though they do exist), was beaten by 11 million difference in votes, which were counted in 2 hours. Two hours. For the entire country.

Also, if you don't beleive me, read this:

"CAIRO — Iran’s most powerful oversight council announced on Monday that the number of votes recorded in 50 cities exceeded the number of eligible voters there by three million, further tarnishing a presidential election that has set off the most sustained challenge to Iran’s leadership in 30 years."

Mickeal Slackman, the writer of the article linked above, asks a very poignant question that dives right into the heart of this matter. "How did the government manage to count enough of the 40 million paper ballots to be able to announce results within two hours of the polls closing?"

Also, there is the fact that Ahmadinejad is not very popular in Iran, or the rest of the world. Before the election, he had been pushing for a nuclear factory to supply clean, natural electricity to the Iranian population.

Now, there are a number of things wrong with this picture.

Number one is that nuclear power plants are perfect for creating weapons of mass destruction. The depleted uranium rods from the reactor core are still exceedingly radioactive, and given 20 or 30 pounds of uranium, a nuclear bomb can be easily assembled from a nuclear power plant. In fact, depleted uranium is used by the US in the middle east to punch through tanks, due to it's density. The result is that statistic for cancer and babies born with deformities are way up.

Number two is the up keep of a nuclear factory. You are dealing with an isotope that is found in very small amounts. It is very dangerous to handle, and even the dust from mining operations lead to leukemia and lung cancer. This doesn't even touch upon he greater issues of building and maintaining an entire plant, which must deal with the waste products produced.

The list of reasons why nuclear energy is dangerous and unsafe goes on and on, but that is not the point of this rant.

While in power, many minority groups have been singled out. Women's rights have been stripped away (after the 2005 election of Ahmadinejad, women were forced to wear the hijab again, a special head covering to hide a women's hair due to it's "very erotic powers over men"). And just recently, six prominent members of the Baha'i community (a 200 year old religion that originated in Persia) were arrested under the pretenses of being "Zionist spies" for the state of Israel.

The rest of the world knows that the Iranian election was rigged. Harper, a man whom Canadians all love to hate (and naturally poke fun at) has spoken out against what is going in Iran. I don't like the man, and I oppose the majority of his politics, but I am glad he has spoken down.

I want to thank all the Iranians back home who are doing their best to resist the regime. Many have been beaten and left on the street by police, while many others are thrown into jail to be tortured. Forgive me if this sounds over he top, but this is happening. You can't ignore it. All over the web, people have been uploading photos, videos and articles, despite Iranians attempts to have a media black out. Any such actions are punishable by death or life in prison.

There's a lot of evidence of police brutality on various sites like youtube and facebook. After finishing two videos, I had just had enough.

Alright, I'm done my rant. You can go back to your lives now.

I think I'm going to throw up.
